Hawk Owl

Last autumn I caught one Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula) in Hanko. It was a typical 1st cy bird very worn and pointed tertials. Light barring of tertials is poor and there are no solid bars from inner to outer web.

Another ageing character is the pattern of two outermost tail feathers. Tips of the feathers are pointed and the outer light bars in inner web (shown by arrows) are not white.
