More Red-flanked Bluetails

This weekend I was able to spend in Kainuu again. It's too bad that the forests holding Bluetails are more than 500 kms from my current home in Helsinki. It makes things little difficult. I'd like to go there more often..

Yesterday morning was very good in Saukkovaara, Ristijärvi. I went there with my friend Teppo Helo and we managed to see 18 Bluetails during morning hours. It was nice to see that the breeding success seems to be good and you can already see rather advanced 1cy birds there. I ringed one 1cy bird and one 2cy male.

The most interesting observation was a group of 3 Grey-headed Woodpeckers. At least one of them was a 1cy bird so we managed to confirm the first ever breeding of this southern species in Kainuu region!
