Jurmo Bird Observatory 26th October-9th November

Ok, something happened! Two weeks have now passed and I'm back in mainland. Jurmo island offered again some nice birding and ringing experiences. We enjoyed exceptionally many calm and nice days and, of course, also stormy days were seen. During those stormy days we tried to catch Puple Sandpipers and on calm days we opened some mistnets for passerines and focused on finding something rare =)

The ringing total of 2 weeks was 321 birds. The rare ones were Black-throated Accentor, Little Bunting and Siberian Chiffchaff. Pine Grosbeaks were seen in tens daily and we also ringed 42 of them. There were no previous ringing records of Pine Grosbeak at the observatory! We also saw 6 Black-legged Kittiwakes, Hawk Owl, Black Redstart, Shore Lark, Twite and many Peregrines.

Our main target for the trip were Purple Sandpipers. Last December we marked 16 Purples with colour rings there and now during this trip we managed to colour ring 26 Purples. Each individual was marked with yellow colour ring with three letters.
We were also happy to manage to read some old rings. Five Purples out of those last year's 16 birds returned to island this winter! We also read four Purples that were marked with colour flags in Svalbard. One of them was also seen in Tammisaari a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks to William for great two weeks there!
